Family Holidays in Montenegro – Memories That Last
Montenegro is a true hidden gem for families. Here, you won't find overcrowded theme parks, but real nature adventures instead: pirate coves, knightly fortresses, and crystal-clear mountain lakes. From your base in Bijela, you can reach the most exciting spots in no time.
I. Water Fun for Little Explorers
The Bay of Kotor is ideal for children, as the water is calmer and often warmer than in the open sea.
- Bijela & Surroundings: The beaches here are pebbly, which means: crystal-clear water and no sandcastle disasters in your hotel room. Water shoes are a must!
- Plavi Horizonti (Lustica): If it has to be sand, this beach on the Lustica Peninsula (approx. 45 min. drive) is paradise. It has a very gentle slope – you can walk hundreds of meters into the water, perfect for toddlers.
II. Action & Adventure: Out into Nature
Lovćen Adventure Park
In the heart of the cool beech forests of Lovćen National Park, you'll find a massive climbing park. There are various courses for all age groups (from age 5). It's the perfect place to escape the coastal heat for a few hours.
Boat Trip to the Blue Cave (Plava Špilja)
A highlight for every child: take a speedboat from Herceg Novi or Igalo to the Blue Cave. The water there glows a magical neon blue. Most tours include a stop at the old submarine tunnels – a real "James Bond" feeling for teenagers!
III. Knights, Castles & Cats
Culture doesn't have to be boring. In Montenegro, history is something you can touch:
- Kotor – The City of Cats: Children love the hundreds of friendly cats that live in the Old Town of Kotor. There’s even a Cat Museum!
- Fortress Explorers: The fortresses in Herceg Novi (Kanli Kula or Forte Mare) are like giant labyrinths. Let the kids explore the ancient walls and secret passages.
Practical Tips for Parents:
- Best Time to Travel: June and September are ideal. It's warm, but not too hot for hiking or sightseeing with children.
- Food: Montenegrin cuisine is very kid-friendly. Pizza, pasta, and grilled chicken are available everywhere. Make sure to try Palačinke (crepes), sold on every corner.
- Safety: Montenegro is considered one of the safest travel destinations in Europe, and the locals are extremely fond of children.
