The Most Beautiful Beaches in Montenegro: A Sun Paradise

Your ultimate guide to the most beautiful swimming spots and hidden coves around Boka Bay.

The Beach Manifesto

Montenegro's Coast: 10 Places Between Myth and Azure Reality

The coastline of Montenegro is more than just land—it’s a dramatic love letter from nature to the Adriatic blue. Across 293 kilometers, you’ll find everything: from volcanic healing sands to white pebble coves accessible only by sea. From your base in Bijela, you are perfectly positioned to explore these jewels.

I. Right on Your Doorstep: Boka Bay & Luštica

1. Dobreč: The Robinson Crusoe Experience

Accessible only by boat! This tiny cove on the Luštica peninsula is the definition of "slow living." There are no roads, no noise—just the sound of cicadas and a top-tier "Konoba" serving fresh catch directly from the fisherman's net.
Vibe: Total privacy and isolation. Access: Take a water taxi from Herceg Novi or charter a private boat.

2. Žanjic: The Olive Grove Lagoon

A vast, snow-white pebble beach at the mouth of the Adriatic. The water here is particularly oxygen-rich and exceptionally clean. Surrounded by ancient olive groves, it has a wonderful Mediterranean retro charm.
Vibe: Classic and relaxed. Tip: From here, small boats depart frequently to the famous Blue Cave (Plava Špilja).

3. Plavi Horizonti: Family Paradise

Located in a deep, sheltered bay, this is one of the few natural sandy beaches near the Bay of Kotor. Its extremely shallow waters make it the safest and most enjoyable spot for toddlers.
Vibe: Family-friendly and secure. Infrastructure: A large pine forest provides plenty of natural shade for midday naps.

II. Worth a Day Trip: The Budva Riviera (approx. 35–45 min from Bijela)

4. Sveti Stefan: The Beach of Kings

Sveti Stefan is the face of Montenegro. The left part of the tombolo (the sandbar connecting the island) is public. Here, you bathe on reddish pebbles with a direct view of the exclusive 15th-century fortress island.
Vibe: Highly exclusive and historical. Tip: Visit the adjacent Miločer Park for a stroll beneath shaded cedar and olive trees.

5. Mogren I & II: The Hidden Duo

A narrow cliffside path leads you from Budva’s Old Town to these two coves. A natural rock tunnel connects the two beaches. Mogren is famous for its sheltered location, making the water glassy and crystal clear even on windy days.
Vibe: Adventurous and romantic. Tip: Look for the "Budva Dancer" statue on your way there—the perfect photo spot.

6. Jaz: The Turquoise Amphitheater

Jaz is one of the largest beaches and a true natural wonder. Nestled in a deep valley, it offers a mix of pebbles and sand. The water here is known for its brilliant turquoise glow due to the light-reflecting seabed.
Vibe: Expansive and high-energy. Infrastructure: Excellent, featuring numerous beach clubs, restaurants, and water sports.

III. Further South: For the Big Sandy Beach (up to ~1.5 h from Bijela)

7. Bečići: The Award-Winning Giant

This nearly 2-kilometer-long beach was named the most beautiful in Europe in Paris (1935). It offers a perfect promenade connecting to Budva and a high-quality mix of fine pebbles and sand.
Vibe: Comfortable and bustling. Tip: Ideal for a long sunset stroll followed by dinner at the shore.

8. Lučice: The Pine-Scented Bay

Located near Petrovac, this perfectly shaped bay is a hidden gem. The pine forests reach almost to the water's edge, filling the air with a wonderful scent. The sand is fine, and the water gets deep quickly—perfect for snorkeling.
Vibe: Cozy and picturesque.

9. Perazića Do: The Rugged Rock Jewel

Tucked away below steep cliffs, this beach is a place for individualists. It offers a dramatic contrast between wild nature and the brutalist architecture of the (unfinished) Hotel AS.
Vibe: Mystic, rugged, and quiet.

10. Velika Plaža: The Gateway to Infinity

Near the border with Albania lies this 13-kilometer dream of fine, dark volcanic sand. Both the air and sand contain healing minerals. It is the ultimate mecca for kitesurfers and freedom seekers.
Vibe: Pure freedom. Experience: Visit the beach bars at Ada Bojana for an unforgettable sunset.

Beach Etiquette & Insider Tips:

  • Sunbed Service: Most top beaches are divided into zones. In "serviced" areas, a set of 2 beds + an umbrella costs between 15€ and 50€ depending on exclusivity.
  • Parking: Expect to pay around 5€ to 10€ for daily parking at popular spots.
  • Water Shoes: Essential for the pebbly beaches within the bay to avoid sea urchins and sharp stones.
  • Water Taxis: From Bijela, we recommend driving to Herceg Novi and taking the boat to Žanjic—the most scenic arrival possible!
